If you could change one thing about teaching…

Hi Reader,

If you could change one thing about traditional classroom teaching… what would it be?

Would you ask for smaller class sizes? More autonomy? Fewer meetings? More time for actual teaching instead of paperwork?

This is one of the first questions I ask teachers who are beginning to imagine life outside of the traditional classroom. Because that “one thing” is usually a clue—something deeper is waiting underneath.

That frustration often points to your core values:

  • What matters most to you
  • What you feel is being overlooked
  • What you’re no longer willing to tolerate

🌱 Want a quick exercise to get even more clarity? Take 5 minutes and try this:

  • Write down 3 things you would change about teaching.
  • For each one, ask yourself: “What does this tell me about what I really value?”

Use those answers to finish this sentence: 👉 “In my ideal teaching business, I would prioritize ______ .”

Here’s an example:

“I’d change the constant pressure to be available 24/7.” → That tells me I value boundaries and work-life harmony. → So in my ideal business, I would prioritize flexibility and control over my schedule. (And now I do!)

This quick reflection can help you start designing a business—and life—that honors who you are as a teacher and a human being.

For me? It was the lack of work-life harmony AND the lack of flexibility in what, how and when I taught what I taught. The way my creativity was constantly boxed in. Once I understood those things, everything shifted.

When I built my private teaching business, I built it with my values instead of around someone else’s expectations. And I’ve helped dozens of other teachers do the same.

So let me ask again: 👉 What would you change about teaching, if you could? 👉 And what does that tell you about what you want more of in your next chapter?

Hit reply—I’d love to hear from you. 💛

With love, respect, and appreciation always,

Rachel
