Starting Your Teaching Business? Don’t Make These 5 Mistakes!

Dear Reader,

Let’s talk about what I’m seeing everywhere right now.

Teachers launching summer programs, posting flyers, sharing about them on their socials— and honestly, I love the energy. It’s exciting to see so many of you putting yourselves out there and making your first moves into business. 🙌🏻

But I’m also seeing some all-too-common mistakes — ones that could slow your growth, stall enrollment, or leave you feeling discouraged when all you really need is a few small tweaks.

Here are 5 of the biggest mistakes I see new teacherpreneurs making (and how to fix them):

1. Wordy, dense marketing.
Too many words. Not enough punch.
Adults — like students — skim. You’ve got to hook them fast, then chunk your message so it’s easy to read.
Grab attention.
Get to the point.
Call out the problem, highlight your solution, and invite them to learn more.
Simple, clear, magnetic messaging wins every time.

2. Explaining how you get results.
You don’t need to give away your process to build trust.
Truth is — people outside of education don’t always understand our methods.
What they do understand is transformation.
Focus on the what (the result) — not the how.
Save your credentials and experience for your About page — not your marketing copy.

3. Pricing too low.
This one hurts to watch.
When you undercharge, it sends the message that your work isn’t valuable — and that can actually drive clients away.
📌 True story: When I raised my rate from $75 to $80/hour, I booked 3 new students within a month.
Right pricing doesn’t just protect your income — it positions you as the expert you are.

4. Skipping intake forms and policies.
If you don’t outline expectations up front, you’re opening the door to miscommunication, no-shows, and awkward conversations.
Your intake form should include:

  • Basic student info
  • Learning goals
  • Scheduling preferences
  • Your terms of service (cancellation, rescheduling, late arrival, etc.)

Protect your time and your peace ✨

5. Taking on the wrong clients.
Don’t say yes out of fear.
If you’re not confident you can help a student — or if something about the dynamic feels off — trust that instinct.
Your energy matters.
☀️ One glowing client might tell 9 others.
😣 A mismatched client? They’ll tell 16–20 why it didn’t work.
(Yes, those stats are real. Let’s keep your word-of-mouth marketing working for you, not against you.)

✨ Ready to build a business that reflects your values, energy, and zone of genius?

That means you could have your business built and ready for students within 7–8 weeks.

I lost myself in the classroom and found myself again in private practice teaching.

Dear Reader, At the end of my last year in the classroom, I was completely spent. And not in the “needs a bubble bath and a nap” kind of way. I mean, crying all summer, questioning everything, incessantly dreading going back, kind of way. But the thing that snapped me awake? - Realizing that my mask had failed and I wasn't successfully hiding anything from anyone. I knew my mask was failing at home when I was too tired from the day, but when students started to notice ... 😓The moment I knew...

Dear Reader, Before we talk about marketing or pricing or posting to Instagram, we need to talk about something way less shiny but MUCH more important: burnout-proofing your business. When I first started my business, I was still recovering from the mental and emotional pressure and unrealistic expectations of classroom teaching.I thought self-employment would feel like sipping chai (or, in my case, a green tea latte) in yoga pants.Instead, I found myself copying classroom hustle energy and...

What's your teacher entrepreneur type?

Hi Reader, Ever feel like you’re scrolling Instagram and everyone else seems to have it figured out… while you’re over here thinking, “Am I behind? Am I even doing this right?” That thought came up again and again in my recent voice-of-customer work — and I realized something big: Most of the teachers in this community actually fall into one of three distinct archetypes. 👉 The Burnt Out Teacher — exhausted but not done. 👉 The New-ish Biz Owner — figuring it out. 👉 The Visionary — ready to...
