🚨 The $20 Mistake That Could Kill Your Business

Dear Reader,

I had a conversation with a teacher-turned-online tutor recently that reminded me just how common it is for educators to undercharge when they first start their own business.

She told me she was charging $20 for a 30-minute session.

Why? Because that seemed to be the “going rate” for tutors in her area.

And listen—I get it. I did the exact same thing when I started.

But underpricing can quietly sabotage your business in two major ways:

1️⃣ It doesn’t reflect the true value of your experience as an experienced and trained educator.
2️⃣ Even if you fill up your schedule, it’s hard to make a sustainable income — which means burnout is lurking around the corner.

So I asked her the question that changed everything for me:
“How much are private music lessons, dance classes, or sports training in your area?”

The answer was clear: a lot more than $20.

What really helped me shift my mindset was thinking of my business more like the dance studio where my daughters took ballet and tap lessons. That’s when I stopped calling myself a “tutor” and started building a teaching business.

Because here’s the truth:
• You don’t have to be a Teacher to be a Tutor.
• But if you ARE a Teacher? Own it. Lead with it. Charge accordingly.

So if you’ve been quietly calling yourself a tutor, it’s time to stop playing small.

You’re a professional educator. You have the training, the experience, and the heart.

Start pricing—and showing up—like it.

You don’t need to earn your worth. You already have. It’s time to own it.

Cheering you on always!
